Wall Street Futures Rise as Oil Prices Fall Ahead of Fed Decision and Technology Earnings: Dow Jones, S&P, Nasdaq
US stock index futures pointed to a higher opening on Monday, indicating a possible recovery following two consecutive sessions of declines on Wall Street, as falling oil prices provided some relief ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision and quarterly earnings from major technology companies.
The anticipated rebound follows losses that pushed the Nasdaq Composite to its lowest closing level since early August and the S&P 500 to a one-month low on Friday.
Investors were also assessing developments in Middle Eastern oil supplies and the outlook for artificial intelligence-related investments, which contributed to volatility in the previous week.
Falling Oil Prices Support US Stock Futures
US crude oil futures declined by more than 2% on Monday, reversing part of the previous week’s gains.
The decrease followed a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM), which said American forces had assisted Gulf partners in exporting more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil since the summer.
CENTCOM also reported that more than 3,000 commercial vessels had passed through the Strait of Hormuz with support from US forces during the preceding six months.
The figures provided additional information about the recovery of regional oil transportation following disruptions associated with the conflict involving Iran.
Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said the improvement in exports was helping to moderate concerns about further military activity.
“The continued recovery in Middle Eastern exports is helping to ease some of the concerns about the possibility of renewed US-Israeli strikes against Iran,” Mould said.
Oil prices had increased during the previous week amid attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen against Saudi Arabia and reports suggesting that the United States and Israel could resume military operations against Iran after the November midterm elections.
US crude futures rose nearly 4% on Friday, moving above $100 per barrel, while Brent crude futures reached a six-month high.
The subsequent decline in oil prices on Monday reduced some of the immediate pressure associated with energy costs and inflation expectations.
Federal Reserve Decision Expected on Wednesday
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its latest monetary policy decision on Wednesday, with interest rates widely expected to remain unchanged.
Investors will focus on the accompanying policy statement for indications of how officials are assessing inflation and the outlook for further monetary tightening.
Market expectations continue to favour a 25-basis-point increase at the Fed’s December meeting.
The central bank’s comments could influence Treasury yields, equity valuations and expectations for borrowing costs.
Trading activity may remain relatively restrained ahead of the announcement, particularly as investors await further information about the direction of US monetary policy.
Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon Earnings in Focus
Quarterly results from major technology companies will also feature prominently in the week’s market calendar.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) are among the companies scheduled to publish earnings.
Their financial reports will be monitored for information about corporate profitability, demand for technology services and spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Concerns about the financing and potential returns of AI-related investments contributed to the recent declines in technology shares.
Investors will assess capital expenditure plans and management guidance to determine how spending on computing infrastructure is affecting financial performance.
The announcements could influence broader equity market sentiment because of the companies’ substantial weight in major US stock indices.
Dow Falls 653 Points as Wall Street Extends Declines
US equities finished lower on Friday, extending losses from the previous session.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 652.82 points, or 1.2%, to close at 52,215.16, retreating from the one-month closing high recorded on Thursday.
The S&P 500 fell 39.75 points, or 0.5%, to 7,623.68, its lowest closing level in approximately one month.
The Nasdaq Composite slipped 53.52 points, or 0.2%, to 25,955.34, its lowest close since early August.
Despite Friday’s decline, the Dow recorded a weekly gain of 0.4%.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq finished the week down 0.5% and 0.7%, respectively.
The declines reflected a combination of higher energy prices, uncertainty surrounding AI investment and caution ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement.
Airlines, Gold Miners and Oil Services Record Sector Movements
Sector performance on Friday reflected the impact of changes in commodity prices.
Airline shares declined as crude oil prices increased, with the NYSE Arca Airline Index falling 2.6%.
Higher fuel costs can increase operating expenses for airlines, making changes in oil prices relevant to their earnings outlook.
Gold mining stocks also declined following a decrease in the price of gold.
The NYSE Arca Gold Bugs Index lost 2.2%, reflecting the weakness across the sector.
Pharmaceutical and retail shares also recorded declines during the session.
In contrast, oil services companies advanced alongside crude prices.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Index increased 5.5%, reflecting gains among companies providing equipment and services to the energy industry.
US Market Outlook
Monday’s futures gains indicated a potential recovery from the previous week’s equity market declines, supported in part by lower crude oil prices.
However, the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision and earnings from major technology companies remain important considerations for investors.
Developments in Middle Eastern energy supplies could also influence oil prices and inflation expectations.
The combination of monetary policy announcements, corporate earnings and geopolitical developments will provide several potential influences on US equity markets during the week.
