What I realized when asking AI 'Isn't that right?' | Asking AI about investing (Part 1)
When asking AI about investing, the first thing I am careful about is not asking ‘Isn’t that right?’ This is because depending on how you ask, you might steer the AI toward the answer you want to hear.
When I was solving a stock practice problem, Bollinger Bands—a term I had never heard before—came up. It is an indicator that represents the range of stock price movement using band-like lines.
Since it seemed difficult, I asked Gemini (Google’s AI) this:
It has nothing to do with high-dividend stocks, right?
High-dividend stocks are stocks that pay a relatively large amount of dividends (money the company distributes to shareholders). Honestly, I wanted it to tell me, ‘You can skip this.’
However, the answer that came back was,
‘It is useful for considering buying opportunities and risks.’
That was the answer.
Thinking about it later, my way of asking was essentially a request for it to say, ‘It’s irrelevant.’ If the AI had answered in line with those words, I might have remained ignorant of something important.
I wrote about this incident in a previous article.
To be honest, until I reviewed my own article, I had even forgotten the term Bollinger Bands. Even so, I still remember that failure in how I asked the question.
Since then, I have made it a point to ask like this:
Is this related? Please also tell me the reason.
When you consult with AI or other people, have you ever already decided on the answer in your own mind? Is that ever the case?
Next time, I will share a story about how I was about to trust the numbers provided by AI, but realized something thanks to a comment from my husband.
