Who gets the average Social Security check for $1,941 in October? These are the payments dates this month
Per the U.S. agency’s official schedule, the Social Security Administration (SSA) began its October 2026 payment schedule on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The latest figures from the SSA show that the average monthly Social Security benefit is $1,941.76. No specific group of beneficiaries receives a $1,941.76 payment, with that figure an average across all Social Security beneficiaries, whose individual payments vary depending on their benefit type and circumstances.
Who gets the average $1,941 Social Security benefit?
The $1,941.76 figure is based on the SSA’s latest Monthly Statistical Snapshot, which covers August 2026. It includes the different types of beneficiaries who receive Social Security, including people receiving retirement, disability and survivor benefits.
- Social Security retirement: $2,033.27
- Social Security disability: $1,498.94

When does October 2026’s three-Wednesdays cycle kick in?
Of the 71.5 million Americans who are signed up to the Social Security program, many are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month. These recipients’ designated payment day is determined by their birthday.
In October 2026, this three-Wednesdays payment cycle kicks off in just under two weeks’ time:
- Born on the 1st-10th of any month: Wednesday, October 14
- Born on the 11th-20th of any month: Wednesday, October 21
- Born on the 21st-31st of any month: Wednesday, October 28
NB: If you claim Social Security based on someone else’s work record, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.
What other Social Security payment date is there in October 2026?
According to the SSA’s official calendar, there is one further Social Security payment run in October, a distribution date that is not birthday-dependent:
- Friday, October 2: Social Security paid to certain long-standing recipients and people who also receive SSI
On Friday, Oct. 2, the SSA is to issue October’s Social Security payments to beneficiaries who began receiving their monthly money before May 1997. Meanwhile, October 2 is also this month’s Social Security distribution date for recipients who simultaneously claim SSI benefits.
Both groups of recipients above usually get their Social Security on the third of the month, but payment has been brought forward as Oct. 3 falls on a Saturday.
The SSA also began its October schedule with SSI payments on Oct. 1. SSI is separate from the Social Security program and provides benefits to eligible low-income individuals who are older, blind or disabled.
