Stock markerts will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7 due to Labor Day.

Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrating the accomplishments and achievements of American workers, according to the Department of Labor.

Labor Day was signed into law as an official federal holiday by President Grover Cleveland in 1894 after years of it being celebrated as a local and state holiday.

“It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker,” the Department of Labor website said.

Here’s what you need to know about the stock market on Sept. 7, 2026.

Will the stock market open on Labor Day?

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will be closed for trading on Sept. 7, 2026, in observance of the federal holiday of Labor Day, according to their websites.

“Stock markets in the US regularly suspend operations throughout the year to observe holidays, such as Presidents’ Day, Juneteenth, and Labor Day,” Fidelity said on their website. “Occasionally, stock markets will close early at 1:00 p.m. on the day before or after major holidays.”

The stock and bond markets will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The next scheduled stock market closure is on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026, in observance of Thanksgiving Day.

When did Rhode Island start celebrating Labor Day?

Rhode Island was a relatively late adopter of Labor Day, signing it into law in spring of 1893 and having their first Labor Day parade later that year. However, Rhode Island has their first “labor celebration” in August 1882, two weeks before New York’s 1882 Labor Day parade, which is often heralded as the first official Labor Day parade in the country.
