The market is likely to monitor Powell’s speech during a time of economic uncertainty amid President Donald Trump’s worldwide tariffs. It is his first public event since U.S. Treasury bonds took a hit following Trump’s tariff announcement.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Monday that the White House will begin interviewing applicants later this year to replace Powell when his tenure ends in May 2026.

Semiconductor giant Nvidia is facing unexpected new U.S. export controls on its H20 chips.
In a filing Tuesday, Nvidia said it was informed by the U.S. government that it will need a license to export its H20 AI chips to China. This license will be required indefinitely, according to the filing — the U.S.

Stocks sank Wednesday after computer chipmaker Nvidia announced it was recording a $5.5 billion charge to comply with a new Trump administration rule on tech-related exports.
Shares of Nvidia lost 7%, causing the tech-heavy Nasdaq to fall as much as 2%. The broad-based S&P 500 declined as much 1.2%.
Stocks opened lower on Wednesday after the latest trade headlines hit Nvidia and other tech stocks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 310 points, or 0.8%. The S&P 500 was down 1.4%. The Nasdaq Composite was down 2.2%.
The yield on the 2-year Treasury note was down to 3.81%.
